Generally inserting a tampon shouldn’t hurt if you do it right, The best way to learn is by practicing. Garb a pack and read the instructions and practice. There’s nothing to be afraid of and you’ll be more comfortable once you’ve learnt, if there’s someone who already uses them and can give you some ideas on how to insert that’ll prob help. There are different ways to insert and you’ve got to find the one that will work for you.
You’ve also got a choice between applicator tampons and non applicator tampons, this one comes down to personal preference, I prefer non applicator, but for your first couple of goes, you may want to try applicator tampons.
    Good luck!

Try putting your leg up on a toilet and pushing it in at a 45 degree angle backwards. Do not push on the very end however, until it is all the way in place. Hold it at the base of the actual tampon part (the middle of the applicator) where there is a little grip spot. When it feels comfortably in place push on the end to insert the actual tampon. When all the way depressed, you can pull the applicator out. You should then be able to move around comfortably with no pain or discomfort. If you feel the tampon inside you or do have pain or discomfort, you might want to try taking it out and inserting another one. Check the placement of the string before removing it though, because sometimes if it is pulled towards the back it is a weird feelings. Try letting it rest towards the front. Removing them is only slightly uncomfortable when they are being brought out too soon. So try to get it right on the first try. Good luck!
